‘Here’s what you need to know about teeth staining…’

Want to know what causes teeth staining, how to prevent it, or how to get rid of it? If so, then you've come to the right place. In today’s post we’ll discuss all things teeth staining from how it occurs to how it can be reduced.

‘Staining of the teeth: causes and effects’

If you're concerned about the colour of your teeth, you're not alone. Many people ask themselves why their teeth have a yellow or brown tint to them. It also doesn't help that we constantly see celebrities with pearly white smiles in every form of media that regularly makes us feel inferior! But to some extent, it's normal for teeth to stain due to age, genetics and even just indulging in general day to day activities. Lets explore this further!

First of all, let’s begin by discussing the three different types of staining.

  • The first is Extrinsic. Extrinsic teeth staining can occur just by engaging in daily habits and consuming foods. The good thing about extrinsic staining is, it’s superficial, only affecting the outer layer of your teeth and therefore, does not carry a lifetime sentence.
  • The second is Intrinsic. Intrinsic stains are entirely contained within the tooth. They are often caused by medications, ingesting too much fluoride during childhood and trauma to the tooth. Meaning unfortunately, intrinsic stains cannot be removed with brushing, scaling or by whitening your teeth.
  • The third is Interdental. Interdental staining occurs when plaque builds up on the teeth causing bacteria and staining to attach to the built up areas. The most common cause of interdental staining is smoking, eating coloured foods, and not using interdental cleaners, such as floss or interdental brushes.

Teeth staining can be caused by many different things. Two of the biggest culprits are food, drinks and tobacco products. Particularly those which contain tannins, acids and are deep in colour. These types of food and beverages are likely to irritate the teeth’ surface and cause demineralisation as well as wear away tooth enamel (the outer protective layer).

Below are some of the main examples of foods and drinks that cause extrinsic discolouration:

  • Tea and coffee
  • Red wine
  • Cola
  • Fruit juices (such as cranberry, blueberry and grape juice)
  • Tomato-based sauces
  • Curry
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Soy sauce
  • Berries
  • Beetroot
  • Tobacco (chewed or smoked)
